Harbor Inn History

This
wonderful place, under the maples, was built in 1870. It
was bought by the Van Pelt family around 1925.
The
comic strip creator, Charles Shultz, was a friend of the Van
Pelt family and stayed with them many memorable times. Lucy,
the character in the Peanuts comic strip was patterned
after Lucy Van Pelt, the wife of one of the Van Pelt sons.

Area History

Pentwater
Village was founded in 1853 with the building of two structures--a
boarding house and lumber mill.
Lumbering
became the early focus of Pentwater, including the reason
the channel from Pentwater Lake to Lake Michigan was created--to
move logs.
When
the raw lumber industry waned, the Village turned to furniture
making, like so much of the Michigan region, shipping furniture
throughout the US.
